Abstract
Tourism being a multi–sectoral industry, requires a well-planned policy to regulate the activities of other related sectors. Badly managed tourist activities may cause many problems. That is why it has been rightly pointed out that unregulated or unplanned tourism can cause unbalanced social change and skew economic development. It can also generate social tension and cause environmental pollution resulting in distortion of life styles and cultural decay, which are the very foundation on which the tourism is built. The haphazard growth of tourist facilities and injecting of tourist inflow beyond the absorption capacity of a particular place/region leads to the depletion of tourism resources of the country. Therefore, the planned policies and programmes help the nation in developing and promoting its tourism.
